NOVIDADES 08/2008

Small is a perfect outsider critic, the kind of wise, generalizing mind who sees the whole picture; he is the opposite of a striving, circumspect academic who has followed the trail of specialization toward the goal of tenure. Though educated in the classical tradition and thoroughly at home with its canon, Small has shown a rare catholicity of interests . . . like all gurus, Small teaches more about how to live in relation to the subject matter than he does about the subject matter itself . . . Small's strength is openness. He fiercely believes in the universality of musical experience and seeks to make understanding of it accessible to the general reader . . . His most personal book, Musicking can be seen as a bold divestment of his own cultural training, ending in the man standing naked before his peers.

A meticulous and informed examination of the compositional style of the greatest Renaissance creator of liturgical music. Author Knud Jeppesen explores the elements and disciplines that constitute Palestrina's personal style including his handling of rhythm, line and harmony. The beginning chapters discuss the standard use of rhythm and harmony in Palestrina's time, setting the context of the work, identifying common and uncommon practices. At the heart of the book is a painstaking examination of Palestrina's use of dissonance and his contrapuntal technique, which forged new harmonic devices that were unorthodox for his time, but proved vital to the development of the western harmonic systems of later years. In addition, Jeppesen includes a complete history of the evolving concept of dissonance before Palestrina, including quotations from some of the earliest theoretical works.

Transcribed by Bill Dobbins. Herbie Hancock is certainly one of the most influential jazz pianists. His recordings as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet and as a leader of several sessions for the Blue Note Label have made an impact on practically all contemporary jazz pianists, especially in terms of harmonic conception and the spontaneous development of melodic and rhythmic ideas. This book contains compositions and piano solos from both of these historically influential sources. Compositions and solos: Oliloqui Valley, Goodbye To Childhood, The Sorcerer Solos on the chord changes to: Autumn Leaves, All of You, My Funny Valentine, Stella By Starlight, I Thought About You, There Is No Greater Love.

The recordings contain two mixes of each composition, one mix for listening and one mix to play along with (without drums).
Sidemen include John Abercrombie (guitar), Richie Beirach or Bill Dobbins (piano), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), David Liebman (soprano & tenor saxophone), Ron McClure or Rufus Reid (bass), Louis Smith (flügelhorn) and Bobby Watson (alto saxophone).
The book contains transcriptions of Billy Hart’s playing with helpful commentary of each recorded performance: A Night In Tunisia - Dizzy Gillespie, Equinox - John Coltrane, Day & Nite - David Liebman, Ralph’s Piano Waltz - John Abercrombie, Embraceable You - George Gershwin, Lo Flame - Bill Dobbins.

Leoš Janácek wrote only two works for cello and piano, of which only Pohádka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work, the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janácek began writing the work before 1910, however, the Pohádka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923.
The second composition, the Presto, is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janácek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janácek himself to Presto. The work has been discussed under this title in recent Janácek literature.

"From the very beginning" - we might use this expression borrowed from Microcosmos to describe this volume of selections from Gábor Vas’s most successful children’s song arrangements, ranging from the simplest, single-line harmonization to page-long little compositions that presuppose deeper knowledge, and providing accordion students with several years’ supply of showy and enjoyable performance pieces. The volume includes such popular melodies as "Sur le pont d’Avignon", "Goodbye, winter", the German "Cuckoo" and the Polish song "The cuckoo is singing".

The ideo-kinetics technique workbook is a methodology based on the relationship between sight and movement. It focuses on visually concentrating only on the notes of the instrument directly in front of the body and ki naesthetically memorising the distance from those reference notes to those outside the immediate field of vision.
It is with this principle that the exercises are developed. This book is highly recommended for all marimbists. It can be used as your primary method or in addition to other current marimba technique philosophies
